Cosmopolitan

The origins of the cosmopolitan are somewhat disputed. It has been in existence since the 1970s, although it was not until the late 1980s that the internationally recognised drink became famous, when it was made in Manhatten. The cosmopolitan is one of the most famous cocktails of the past 20 years.

Many people were involved in making the cosmopolitan cocktail popular by selling it in their bars and some adding extra ingredients for their own take on the new cocktail. These people included; Neil Murray, John Caine, Cheryl Cook and Melissa Huffsmith.

The recipe for the cosmopolitan cocktail is a classic ‘sour family’ cocktail, the spirit is Vodka, the sour is lime juice and the sweet is Cointreau.

In the 1990s the cosmopolitan cocktail became very popular due to its frequent appearance in the US hit series ‘Sex and the city’.

To make a Cosmopolitan:

  • 2 Measures of Vodka
  • 1 Measure of Cointreau
  • 1 Measure of Cranberry Juice
  • 1/2 Measure of Lime Juice
  • ice cubes

Shake all the ingredients together with plenty of ice in a cocktail shaker. Strain and serve in a chilled martini glass.
